Website user guides
introduction, admin and security

Now that your website is up and running it’s time to get to grips with the content management system that will allow you to log in and easily make changes to your site.

logging in

To manage your site and publish blog articles you need to log in to your website’s admin pages. Please refer to your documentation for your own log in details.

basic security measures

All websites are vulnerable to malicious attack – even yours – so it’s important to take at least some basic steps towards securing your site. Here are some essential tips:

Make sure your admin password is not easy to guess
Avoid using any words that could be linked to you and therefore guessed by hackers – for example, names, places, dates.
Instead use random passwords that contain a mixture of numbers, letters and special characters.

Do not share your password with anyone
If you need to give others access to your site let us know and we can create a user account for them, with their own password

Keep your computer and mobile devices secure
Don’t store your passwords in documents on your computer/other devices (use secure password apps like Keychain instead)
Make sure your devices are protected with their own secure passwords, just incase they end up in the wrong hands

Avoid suspicous online content
Be vigilant of email phishing scams – don’t click on links in emails unless you are 100% sure of the source
Avoid websites that could contain malware

I recommend the Edgeways Maintenance and Security package for all new websites. This includes installation and set up of highly rated security plugins that automatically scan your website for any signs of suspiscious activity and block any malicious users or attempted hacks. Find out more here.

The Dashboard

When you first log in you’ll be taken to the WordPress Dashboard area.
There are only two main areas that you will need to make yoursef familiar with – the top bar and the first section of the sidebar.

Top Bar

Home Icon And Your Website Name
Click your website name next to the home icon (top left, ‘Demo website’ in the example pictured) to view your live site.

Plus Icon And News
Click here and select New Post to quickly start a new blog post.

Posts are blog posts. Clicking here will take you to a page that lists all your published and draft posts. This is useful if you want to switch post comment functionality on or off.

This is where all your images (and other media) are stored.

Clicking here will bring up a list of your websites pages (home, contact us etc). It’s easier to open the live site and navigate to the page you’d like to edit.

All the comments posted on your blog articles will be listed here – approved, pending and spam.
